A Moroccan anchorage
He traces, draws, paints. He lives in New York, Tivoli in the Hudson Valley, Hydra Island in Greece and Marrakesh in Morocco. Brice Marden is an American artist, painter and engraver, born in 1938. Qualified as a minimalist, he relies on emotion rather than understanding. He embraces nature to make it appear in his art, by its forms, its organic colors. He is inspired by calligraphy, landscapes … Moroccan, among others. In 1978, his wife, Helen, introduced him to this country. She wanted to meet Paul Bowles, a writer living in Tangier. The first contact with Morocco is created. In 1983, Brice Marden returned to teach before the couple bought a riad in the heart of the medina. But this anchorage does not prevent him from traveling within the country, along the coast, inland, in the heart of the desert. He lets himself be carried away, charmed, inspired.

Il trace, dessine, peint. Il vit à New York, à Tivoli dans la vallée de l’Hudson, sur l’île d’Hydra en Grèce et à Marrakech au Maroc. Brice Marden est un artiste américain, peintre et graveur, né en 1938. Qualifié de minimaliste, il mise sur l’émotion plutôt que l’entendement. Il embrasse la nature pour la faire transparaître dans son art, par ses formes, ses couleurs organiques. Il s’inspire de la calligraphie, des paysages… marocains, entre autres. En 1978, sa femme, Helen, lui fait découvrir ce pays. Elle voulait y rencontrer Paul Bowles, écrivain installé à Tanger. Le premier contact avec le Maroc se crée. En 1983, Brice Marden y retourne pour enseigner avant que le couple n’achète un riad au cœur de la médina. Mais cet ancrage ne l’empêche pas de voyager au sein du pays, le long des côtes, dans les terres, au cœur du désert. Il se laisse entraîner, charmer, inspirer.

Brice Marden always carries with him a notebook in which he draws intimately and naked. Each page is a study of a potential future work. This year, at the Yves Saint Laurent museum, he exhibited sixty drawings drawn from a notebook that followed the painter for more than ten years. A notebook he filled in memory of a deceased friend. A tribute but also an opportunity to dive deeper into the intimate, in his art. We find the Moroccan lines, the colors, the light.

Brice Marden emporte toujours avec lui un carnet dans lequel il dessine de manière intime et dénudée. Chaque page est une étude d’une potentielle œuvre future. Cette année, c’est au musée Yves Saint Laurent qu’il a exposé une soixantaine de dessins tirés d’un carnet qui a suivi le peintre pendant plus de dix ans. Un cahier qu’il a rempli en souvenir d’un ami décédé. Un hommage mais aussi une opportunité de plonger plus profondément dans l’intime, dans son art. On y retrouve les lignes marocaines, les couleurs, la lumière.
