Eric Van Hove, a belgian-algerian artist
Eric Van Hove is an atypical artist. Belgo-Algerian, raised mainly in Cameroon, it is in Marrakech that he established his workshop. As for everything, multidisciplinary, he does not seem to have any comfort zones as its borders are unclear and flexible. He does not hesitate to take his works out of traditional galleries and museums to exhibit them in remote areas of the world. He questions, plunges into existentialism.

Eric Van Hove est un artiste atypique. Belgo-algérien, élevé principalement au Cameroun, c’est pourtant à Marrakech qu’il a établi son atelier. Touche à tout, pluridisciplinaire, il ne semble pas avoir de zones de confort tant ses frontières sont floues et flexibles. Il n’hésite pas à sortir ses œuvres des galeries et musées traditionnels pour les exposer dans des zones reculées du monde. Il interroge, se plonge dans l’existentialisme.
The Mahjouba Initiative
Eric Van Hove questions the objects, the economic mechanisms that underlie them. He who likes to work with local artisans, imagined the project ‘Mahjouba’, the creation of an electric vehicle for which most of the pieces were designed by craftsmen, others reused from old vehicles. He plays on the relationship between global and local, industrial and artisanal productions. Eric Van Hove draws on the alternative obviously and combines ancestral techniques with digital such as 3D printing or solar power.

Eric Van Hove questionne les objets, les mécanismes économiques qui les sous-tendent. Lui qui aime à travailler avec des artisans locaux, a imaginé le projet ‘Mahjouba’, soit la création d’un véhicule électrique dont la plupart des pièces ont été conçues par des artisans, d’autres réutilisées à partir d’anciens véhicules. Il se joue du rapport entre les productions mondiales et locales, industrielles et artisanales. Il puise dans l’alternatif évidemment et combine des techniques ancestrales à du numérique comme l’impression 3D ou l’alimentation à l’énergie solaire.
Between art and stakes
In the work of Eric Van Hove, conceptual art, activism and reflection mingle. Fully customizable prototypes are born swaying between the artwork and the usual object. The definition is outstanding. For his project ‘Mahjouba’, he led several think tanks to produce vehicles (currently five in number) able to move in Morocco and likely to suit life, use. ‘Mahjouba’ goes beyond art and tries to meet economic, environmental and behavioral needs.
Entre art et enjeux
Dans l’œuvre d’Eric Van Hove, l’art conceptuel, l’activisme et la réflexion se mêlent. Naissent des prototypes entièrement personnalisables se balançant entre l’œuvre d’art et l’objet usuel. La définition est en suspens. Pour son projet ‘Mahjouba’, il a mené plusieurs think tanks afin de produire des véhicules (au nombre de cinq aujourd’hui) capables de se déplacer au Maroc et susceptibles de convenir à la vie, à l’usage. ‘Mahjouba’ dépasse l’art et tente de répondre à des besoins économiques, environnementaux, comportementaux.
