Painter of Catalonia
Marià Josep Bernat Fortuny i Marsal or rather Mariano Fortuny is a Catalan painter known by a name with Italian consonances. He was born in 1838 and despite his life shortened to 36 years by malaria, he is a renowned painter who has enjoyed great success for his genre paintings. His career is inseparable from that of Josep Tapiró i Baró, a college student, a painter friend and a tireless journeyman.

Marià Josep Bernat Fortuny i Marsal ou plutôt Mariano Fortuny est un peintre catalan connu sous un nom aux consonances italiennes. Né en 1838 et malgré sa vie raccourcie à 36 ans par la paludisme, il est un peintre renommé ayant connu un large succès pour ses tableaux de genre. Son parcours est indissociable de celui de Josep Tapiró i Baró, comparse d’études, ami peintre et compagnon indéfectible de voyage.
The light of Morocco
Mariano Fortuny was born into a modest family. Orphaned at the dawn of adolescence, he was raised by his grandfather but emancipated quickly to return to the Academy of Fine Arts. Noted, the gifted student evolves quickly … so that in 1859 he is sent to North Africa as a chronicler to portray the events of the conflict between Spain and Morocco. First shock: the Moroccan colors, the heat, the brilliance of Africa. These contrasts inspire and touch him, so that he immerses himself in Orientalism.
La lumière du Maroc
Mariano Fortuny est né au sein d’une famille modeste. Orphelin à l’aube de l’adolescence, il est élevé par son grand-père mais s’émancipe rapidement pour rentrer à l’Académie des Beaux-Arts. Remarqué, l’élève doué évolue vite… si bien qu’en 1859, il est envoyé en Afrique du Nord en tant que chroniqueur pour dépeindre les événements du conflit opposant l’Espagne et le Maroc. Premier choc : les couleurs marocaines, la chaleur, la brillance de l’Afrique. Ces contrastes l’inspirent et le touchent, si bien qu’il se plonge dans l’orientalisme.
Morocco as inspiration
In 1862, he returned to Morocco with his friend Josep Tapiró i Baró. With two other painters, they cross Morocco on horseback, mainly Tetouan and paint the daily scenes that flood their eyes. From these two trips to Morocco are born many paintings by Mariano Fortuny, halfway between impressionism and the pictorial movement but deeply rooted in a realistic orientalism.
Le Maroc comme inspiration
En 1862, il retourne sur le sol marocain accompagné de son ami Josep Tapiró i Baró. Avec deux autres peintres, ils sillonnent le Maroc à cheval, Tétouan principalement et peignent les scènes quotidiennes qui inondent leurs regards. De ces deux voyages au Maroc naissent de nombreux tableaux de Mariano Fortuny, à mi-chemin entre l’impressionnisme et le mouvement pictural mais profondément ancré dans un orientalisme réaliste.
