A passionate photographer
Martine Franck was born in Antwerp in 1938. Her childhood oscillated between the United States and England before she studied art history in Madrid and Paris. She starts almost by chance in photography. In 1964, she travelled to Nepal with her childhood friend Ariane Mnouchkine. She marvels, lives fully and the pictures of her journey lead her to work as assistant of famous photographers

Martine Franck nait à Anvers en 1938. Son enfance oscille entre les Etats Unis et l’Angleterre avant qu’elle n’étudie l’histoire de l’art à Madrid puis à Paris. Elle débute presque par hasard en photographie. En 1964, elle voyage au Népal avec son amie d’enfance Ariane Mnouchkine. Elle s’émerveille, vit pleinement et les clichés de son voyage l’amènent à travailler ensuite comme assistante de célèbres photographes.
She started at Time-Life, became the official photographer of the “Théâtre du Soleil” company, then joined the VU agency followed by VIVA. She shoots portraits of artists and writers but is passionate about humanitarian reporting. In 1983, she became a member of the agency Magnum Photos. Quickly, she mixes social action with her photographs and her path leads her to Nepal and then Tibet, a country with which she weaves special ties, and becomes a defender of the Tibetan cause. She died in 2012, leaving vacant the presidency of the Foundation she created with her husband.
Elle débute chez Time-Life, devient la photographe officielle de la compagnie du Théâtre du Soleil, puis rejoint l’agence VU suivie par VIVA. Elle réalise des portraits d’artistes, d’écrivains mais se passionne surtout pour les reportages humanitaires. En 1983, elle devient membre de l’agence Magnum Photos. Rapidement, elle mêle l’action sociale à ses photographies et son chemin l’amène encore au Népal puis au Tibet, pays avec lequel elle tisse des liens particuliers. Elle devient défenseuse de la cause tibétaine. Elle meurt en 2012, laissant vacante la présidence de la Fondation qu’elle a créée avec son mari.
